Concrete

Concrete Paving Services in Houston and Surrounding Areas

Concrete is one of the most versatile building materials on earth. When it is designed, mixed, placed and finished correctly, a concrete driveway or patio can serve a home for decades with little maintenance. At Sealtechs we pour new concrete surfaces and repair or replace existing slabs across Houston and the metropolitan area. Our work follows American Concrete Institute (ACI) and industry guidelines so your investment lasts in the Gulf Coast climate.
Why Quality Matters
Concrete looks simple – it is just cement, water, sand, gravel and sometimes admixtures – but durability is built into the details. The design of the mix, the thickness of the slab, sub‑grade preparation, placement and finishing all affect how concrete performs. ACI’s residential concrete code (ACI 332‑20) sets minimum requirements for cast‑in‑place concrete used in one‑ and two‑family dwellings and slabs‑on‑ground. We base our work on these standards because shortcuts can lead to cracking, uneven settlement or premature surface failure.
Our Concrete Services
Driveways & Parking Pads – We pour standard and reinforced driveways sized for residential vehicles or light commercial use. Proper thickness (generally 4 inches or more for passenger vehicles and 5 inches where heavier vehicles access) and drainage slope help these slabs stand up to Houston’s rain and clay soils.
Patios, Walkways & Pool Decks – Outdoor living spaces are designed for comfort and safety. We incorporate expansion joints, textured finishes and optional color treatments to create attractive and slip‑resistant surfaces.
Slabs & Pads for Sheds, RVs and AC units – Small structural slabs support heavy loads; we include appropriate reinforcement and isolation joints to prevent cracking.
Decorative & Colored Concrete – Ask about integrally colored mixes, stamped patterns or surface treatments to match your landscape.
Repair & Resurfacing – If your existing slab has spalling, cracking or pitting, we can repair damaged areas and install protective coatings or sealers to extend its life.
Industry Standards for Residential Concrete:
We follow ACI and industry best practices when preparing, placing and finishing concrete. Below is an overview of key requirements and how we implement them.
Subgrade and Base:
A solid foundation is essential. ACI guidelines require the sub‑grade to be uniform, well‑compacted and free of organic or unconsolidated materials.
Slab Thickness & Drainage:
Concrete slabs must be thick enough to resist loads. ACI guidelines recommend 4 to 5 inches for driveways depending on soil conditions and vehicle weight. To prevent water ponding, the slab should be sloped at least 1⁄8 inch per foot and preferably ¼ inch per foot. Our crews carefully set forms and screed guides to achieve consistent thickness and slopes.
Jointing & Crack Control:
Concrete will crack as it shrinks and moves; control joints encourage cracks to form at straight, planned lines. Joints should be spaced no more than 24 times the slab thickness (i.e., every 8 ft for a 4 inch slab) and cut to at least ¼ of the slab depth. Panels should be nearly square, with length‑to‑width ratios not exceeding 1.5 to 1. Isolation joints separate the slab from foundations, steps and other structures. We install joints promptly after finishing—either with saw cuts or pre‑formed material—and fill them with flexible sealant to reduce water infiltration.
Placement & Finishing:
Proper placement prevents segregation and ensures a uniform surface. We Place concrete within 90 minutes of batching and avoid re‑tempering with water.
Strike off and bull float the surface; wait until bleed water has evaporated before further finishing. Finishing while water is present can trap moisture and weaken the surface.
Use broom or float finishes for exterior work—never hard steel trowels or swirl patterns, which ACI and contractors caution against.
Tool edges and tooled joints to improve appearance and reduce chipping.
Sealing & Maintenance:
After curing (typically 28 days), a penetrating sealer can be applied to protect against water and de‑icing salts. Silane or siloxane‑based sealers help resist chloride penetration and staining. Sealers may need re‑application every few years; we recommend annual inspection and occasional cleaning to extend the life of your concrete.
